Women, Wealth Effects, and Slow Recoveries

چکیده
Business cycle recoveries have slowed in recent decades. This slowdown comes entirely from female employment, as women’s employment rates converged toward men’s during the past half-century. But does growth of translate into a for overall rates? We estimate extent to which women “crowd out” men labor market across US states, and find that it is small. Through lens general equilibrium model with home production, we show this statistic implies 60-75 percent business can be explained by convergence.(JEL D13, E24, E32, J16, J21)

Household Debt, Unemployment, and Slow Recoveries∗
This paper analyzes the effect of endogenous unemployment risk on the dynamics of recovery from a liquidity trap. In a liquidity trap, an adverse demand shock raises unemployment and produces a period of slow hiring. Slow hiring further reduces demand, both for standard precautionary reasons and because credit conditions endogenously worsen, reducing households’ ability to borrow and consume. T...

The extent of and changes in inter-generational mobility of wealth are central to understanding dynamics of wealth inequality but hard to measure. Using estate tax returns data, we observe that the share of women among the very wealthy (top 0.01%) in the United States peaked in the late 1960s, reaching almost 50%. Three decades on, women’s share had declined to one third, a return to pre-war le...

متن کاملWealth effects and agency costs
We analyze how the agent’s initial wealth affects the principal’s expected profits in the standard principal-agent model with moral hazard. We show that if the principal prefers a poorer agent for all specifications of action sets, probability distributions, and disutility of effort, then the agent’s utility of income must exhibit a coefficient of absolute prudence less than three times the coe...
متن کاملLarger Crises, Slower Recoveries: The Asymmetric Effects of Financial Frictions
Lending rates are more likely to experience big jumps rather than big drops. I compare this asymmetry across countries. First, I document that lending rates are more asymmetric in economies with poor financial systems. Second, I explain this finding by introducing agency costs into a model with endogenous flow of information about the aggregate state of the economy. High monitoring costs magnif...
